Work placement 18/12/07

Today I went through all the advertisers I had called the previous week and put into ACT, and then created literature to send to them as well as doing a mail merge. I also looked in the yellow pages for potential advertisers for the valentines features for the Jan/Feb 08 issue. I also added on to my Apperley Bridge feature and had to adjust the word count of the story for each publication- 380 for the Local Focal and 550 for Here & now! I also looked for pictures of the old Apperley Bridge railway station and emailed copyright owners for use of their pictures.

Week 2 17/12/07

Today I updated the website again, and wrote Christmas cards to advertisers. I also phoned more advertisers to put in ACT.

I then helped with the flat plan of the Local Focal magazine, which involved deciding where editorial and adverts would go in the publication.

Work placement day 5

Today I was shown how adverts and layout are created on Indesign. I also updated more of the website.

Picture speaks a thousand words?

I extended my feature on the Apperley Bridge story for Here & now! magazine today. My boss asked me to find pictures of the old Apperley Bridge railway station , and I couldn't believe how hard it was. It took me ages to find some pictures, and then when i eventually did, they were protected by Copyright. So to make sure i don't get sued, now I have had to email the owner of the pictures and ask their permission to use the pictures, but the story has to be out tommorrow, so I hope to God the copyright owner will give me the go ahead in the morning.

It is the same when i write articles for IBlog, but at least the deadline isn't as bad!

However, I did come across a useful website where you can buy pictures from them for as little as £3- a lot cheaper than a court battle as all journalists should know! The website is called Zengle and you can also sell your photos to them and get half of their selling price.

It's a bit like Ebay for pictures really, but without the bidding! Unfortunatley it didn't have any pictures that i needed- but the pictures i wanted would be a few centuries old, so basically they are pretty impossible to find! But i will keep this website in mind for future reference, as it does have a lot of quality modern pictures.

Day 4 Work Placement

Today i inputted information on the website, and went through the magazine's online business directory, updating advertiser details.

Day 3 Work Placement at Here & Now

Today i interviewed companies for my feature on Apperley Bridge, such as Metro who were really helpful. I then wrote a feature on the story.

I also carried on putting potential advertisers into ACT.

Day 2 Work Placement

Today i learnt how to use the company's database ACT which they use to list everyone who they keep in contact with. I went through competitor magazines and phoned up their advertisers in order to send literature to them to promote advertising in Here & Now and the Local Focal.

I also started to research the new opening of Apperley Bridge railway station on the Internet, which is due to be reopened in 2010.

Day 1 at Here & Now Magazine

Started at my work placement at Here & Now Magazine, a local magazine which is distributed in Bradford and Leeds. Today i was shown the magazines website, and was shown Here & Nows other publications, the Local Focal. I was also shownthe main local competitor magazines.
