Work placement 18/12/07

Today I went through all the advertisers I had called the previous week and put into ACT, and then created literature to send to them as well as doing a mail merge. I also looked in the yellow pages for potential advertisers for the valentines features for the Jan/Feb 08 issue. I also added on to my Apperley Bridge feature and had to adjust the word count of the story for each publication- 380 for the Local Focal and 550 for Here & now! I also looked for pictures of the old Apperley Bridge railway station and emailed copyright owners for use of their pictures.

Week 2 17/12/07

Today I updated the website again, and wrote Christmas cards to advertisers. I also phoned more advertisers to put in ACT.

I then helped with the flat plan of the Local Focal magazine, which involved deciding where editorial and adverts would go in the publication.

Work placement day 5

Today I was shown how adverts and layout are created on Indesign. I also updated more of the website.

Picture speaks a thousand words?

I extended my feature on the Apperley Bridge story for Here & now! magazine today. My boss asked me to find pictures of the old Apperley Bridge railway station , and I couldn't believe how hard it was. It took me ages to find some pictures, and then when i eventually did, they were protected by Copyright. So to make sure i don't get sued, now I have had to email the owner of the pictures and ask their permission to use the pictures, but the story has to be out tommorrow, so I hope to God the copyright owner will give me the go ahead in the morning.

It is the same when i write articles for IBlog, but at least the deadline isn't as bad!

However, I did come across a useful website where you can buy pictures from them for as little as £3- a lot cheaper than a court battle as all journalists should know! The website is called Zengle and you can also sell your photos to them and get half of their selling price.

It's a bit like Ebay for pictures really, but without the bidding! Unfortunatley it didn't have any pictures that i needed- but the pictures i wanted would be a few centuries old, so basically they are pretty impossible to find! But i will keep this website in mind for future reference, as it does have a lot of quality modern pictures.

Day 4 Work Placement

Today i inputted information on the website, and went through the magazine's online business directory, updating advertiser details.

Day 3 Work Placement at Here & Now

Today i interviewed companies for my feature on Apperley Bridge, such as Metro who were really helpful. I then wrote a feature on the story.

I also carried on putting potential advertisers into ACT.

Day 2 Work Placement

Today i learnt how to use the company's database ACT which they use to list everyone who they keep in contact with. I went through competitor magazines and phoned up their advertisers in order to send literature to them to promote advertising in Here & Now and the Local Focal.

I also started to research the new opening of Apperley Bridge railway station on the Internet, which is due to be reopened in 2010.

Day 1 at Here & Now Magazine

Started at my work placement at Here & Now Magazine, a local magazine which is distributed in Bradford and Leeds. Today i was shown the magazines website, and was shown Here & Nows other publications, the Local Focal. I was also shownthe main local competitor magazines.

Petrol prices hit an all time high

So the average price for petrol is now £1 a litre according to researchers Catalyst. The 10p rise for diesel will now mean that some businesses have to spend an extra £3000 on it.

The rise is because crude oil in America has reached $100 a barrel, and the global markets concerns over the weak dollar and shortage of winter fuel.

Compared to this time last year, the average motorist now has to pay amost £7 more to fill up their petrol tank, meaning that those families with two cars are now spending around £30 a month more.

Wife and mother of one, Sam Brown, 26, says she has found a new alternative to buying her petrol in the UK. She said: "I have been buying my petrol direct over the internet. Because it's not UK sourced, you don't have to pay UK tax."

But another member of the public, Mark Adams, 30, doesn't really think the rise will affect him much. "For most people fuel rises don't actually make much difference, my fuel has only gone up a couple of quid a week . I drive 12 miles a day, and it's still cheaper than public transport for me. Petrol prices are up and down like a yoyo, they may have gone up a couple of pence now, but they will go down again. For most people it's really not worth kicking up a fuss about."

Head of AA road safety, Andrew Howard said, "More and more retailers are accepting that they have to break through the psychological £1 per litre barrier.

"It is likely that with the average now through the barrier more rises will follow.

"This, coupled with steadily rising prices on the world oil markets, mean that relief for the British motorist is unlikely in the near future."

You can find out your most cheapest local petrol provider at http://www.petrolprices.com/. The website also gives you information on how to save money on petrol, like lift sharing, and not driving too fast, as this wastes petrol.

Petrol prices don't affect me as yet, as i have not yet passed my driving test, but i hope to be driving in a years time. I just wonder how much the average litre of petrol is going to cost then?
